Fever Ray – Mercy Street
The original song by Peter Gabriel is already a fantastic piece of music, but this cover by Fever Ray takes it to a whole new level.
My neighbors @cabininthewoods should know it inside out by now, as I’ve used it to test the structural stability of the house more than once.
Matthew Mayfield – God’s Fault
„Sad men with guitars“ is somehow the motto of this playlist, and we’re starting with Matthew Mayfield. This was a Spotify suggestion, and I’m really digging this song.
Katherine Priddy – Wolf
On the other hand, the sad men are joined almost equally by incredible women this year, which makes me very happy. Katherine Priddy is a gem from Birmingham with a wonderful voice and captivating melodies.
Calypso – Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Calypso is a truly fascinating artist. Jascha recommended „The Exorcist“ from his album Major Motion Monster, and I was instantly hooked. Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with its beautiful chainsaw intro, is my current favorite.
Loner Deer – Million Miles
This is my song of the year. And my artist of the year, according to Spotify. I spent hours last year listening to Loner Deer while working @cabininthewoods. It was also a very country (music) and western (movies/shows)-heavy year—see my 2024 review.
Joachim Witt – Propaganda
The old master is still smashing it! Der Fels in der Brandung is a brilliant album featuring some intriguing collaborations (e.g., Marianne Rosenberg, Nino de Angelo).
I would have loved to see Joachim live @BETT in Frankfurt, but those ticket prices—no way am I paying over 60 Euros for that.
First Aid Kit – You Are the Problem Here
I had planned to include the Söderberg sisters in my 2017 sampler, but despite Wolf being an amazing song, they didn’t make it. Yet, they keep showing up in my playlists. The message of You Are the Problem Here is too important not to share at any time.
Marc Scibilia – More to This
New apps, new musicians—Marc found his way into this playlist via TikTok, where I first saw and heard him. The song really hits the mark, and I look forward to exploring more of his music.
Samantha Crain – When We Remain
Another fantastic addition to the „impressive female musicians“ category, and the first song in Choctaw language on my playlists. I can’t quite recall how I discovered Samantha Crain—something on Mastodon? Sven wrote about it?
Whatever the case, she’s amazing, and I can’t recommend her music enough.
David Eugene Edwards – Bright Boy
Nothing new here—everyone knows how I feel about DEE. I can listen to him for days on end. His unique style of goth-country (or whatever you want to call it) really resonates with me.
He’s been a staple in these samplers for years now, with Wovenhand and 16 Horsepower, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
Heldom – Ofring
Janus Pedersen and his project Heldom have been a big part of my musical landscape over the past year, almost as much as Loner Deer. Other artists in this genre (Danheim, Forndom, and Heilung) also dominate my playlists.
Dark, hypnotic, and Nordic. Mmm, perfect.
Amélie Farren – Unsweetened Lemonade
Another recommendation from Jascha. What a cool artist—sharp lyrics and great compositions. I’m very grateful for this discovery.
Engst – Herr Meier von der AfD
What can I say? A fine German band, and not just because of this song. I’m glad I found them.
Leftfield – Storms End
Since Open Up in 1993, Leftfield has had a permanent place in my musical heart. They were already featured in my 2013 sampler with Space Shanty.
Beats and melodies at their best!
New Model Army – Eyes Get Used to the Darkness
In the seemingly endless oeuvre of NMA, who have accompanied me for over 30 years, I keep discovering songs I hadn’t given the attention they deserved.
Eyes Get Used to the Darkness is a signature NMA song: from its composition to the lyrics and overall vibe, it’s pure NMA. What an incredible band.
Heilung – Asja
As you know, we experienced Heilung live this year, and we’ll be drawing from that for a long time. I could put every single song from Drif on this playlist. Anoana was already on last year’s list, so I had to choose just one.
Asja absolutely captivated me at the concert and has likely played hundreds of times for me this year.
Mal Élevé – Barrer
Whether with Irie Révoltés or solo, Mal has earned a permanent spot in my annual samplers. The concert in Stuttgart was amazing, and to counter the darker tone of this playlist, here’s something a bit more upbeat.
Ween – Buenas Tardes Amigo
Thank you, Spotify—this was a jackpot. I listened to this song for the first time with disbelief, a growing grin, and finally laughter. It’s so absurd that it works perfectly. The clichés in the instrumentation are elevated to such an absurd level that it’s truly art.
Ween is just such a delightfully messed-up band.
Das Lumpenpack feat. Adam Angst – Kruppstahl, Baby
Feel-good music against right-wing nonsense. A great piece—listen and enjoy.
Janus – Graue Seelen
Janus isn’t on Spotify, so this song is only available in the YouTube playlist. I first heard it at their concert at the Frankfurter Hof this year. Not only is the song great, but the video is fantastic too.
I’m looking forward to seeing the guys „plugged“ at BETT later this year.
Colter Wall – Kate McCannon
If this recording from YouTube were available on Spotify or an album, I’d have bought it by now. Colter Wall’s performance at the 16 Brewery in 2017 (at just 22 years old) is stunning. That voice, that intensity—no studio recording can match it. That’s why this song isn’t in the regular sampler and only appears in the YouTube version.
