Artikel aus Wonnegau (Rhein-Main-Presse) vom 26.04.04:

GIMBSHEIM.

– Schulter ausgekugelt
– Rippe gebrochen
– Hüfte ausgerenkt und Hüftpfanne gebrochen
– Knie geprellt, Verdacht auf Kreuzbandriss
– Wadenbein gebrochen

GIMBSHEIM: A serious traffic accident with three seriously injured people occurred on Saturday on the bypass road between Eich and Gimbsheim. A 13-year-old girl from Frankfurt had to be taken to the University Hospital in Mainz by a rescue helicopter. According to the Worms police, this accident is not connected with the motorcycle blessing that took place shortly before. According to police, a 37-year-old Eicher motorcyclist had drifted into the oncoming lane in a right-hand bend, striking an oncoming motorcycle driven by a 41-year-old Frankfurt man who had his 13-year-old daughter on the back seat. All three ended up in hedges. While trying to swerve, the following 35-year-old mother of the Frankfurt family also fell off her motorcycle and landed in a bush. While the woman was only slightly injured, her husband and daughter as well as the person from Eich who caused the accident suffered serious injuries. According to the police, however, all three injured are not in danger of death.

To this day, I do not know what is even approximately complicated about that curve. This is actually not a curve. Anyway, that’s how it looks when you drive in the direction from B9 to Eich, which we did on 24.04.04 to spend a nice evening with friends.
Us, that was Kathinka, me and my daughter Katrin, who was riding pillion on my VFR.
In this ‚curve‘ another motorcyclist on a Suzuki SV 650 came diagonally from the front towards me, was carried further and further out of the (from his point of view) right-hand bend, and then collided with us. At the time of the collision, both of us were traveling at about 100 km/h. The result was the situation mentioned in the article.
The result was the serious injuries to me and Katrin mentioned in the article. Kathinka also crashed while trying to avoid the other’s machine that was swerving towards her, but fortunately only sustained minor injuries. Katrin was flown by helicopter to the university hospital in Mainz, and I was taken by ambulance to the city hospital in Worms.
I will not write anything about Katrin’s injuries here.

The right side had not been damaged, so there were a lot of needles, cannulas, measuring devices, and whatnot stuck in there2.
On the left side it looked different:
– shoulder dislocated
– broken rib
– hip dislocated and acetabulum broken
– knee bruised, suspected cruciate ligament rupture
– calf bone broken
– metatarsal broken several times

Top priority, however, was the hematopneumothorax, consequence of a pulmonary contusion with tear, which at first made an operation of the hip impossible.

The impact took place at the height of my left footrest, this bent downwards, the shoe was bent upwards and the steel cap then accordingly crunched my foot.
Due to the loss of the footrest’s hold, the knee probably went away from the tank and I seem to have tried to catch the machine of my opponent in the accident with my leg. Thereby the leg was turned out of the hip socket.
In the hospital first diagnostics, at some point the shoulder was relocated (general anesthesia), the leg was stretched and I diligently did breathing exercises. Two days later the hip could be operated.
The torn-out piece of the hip socket is now held in place by a plate with 7 screws, which will probably only fall through the grate in the crematorium.
The left foot was sutured, but the suture across did not hold. Stitching again or healing from the inside out was a choice, I opted for the latter. This took over a month. But the foot is still attached and mobile, the ankle joint has not been damaged. Around the wide scar, however, it sometimes hurts like hell…
Due to the knee contusion and fibula fracture, the nervus peroneus was damaged, so that I cannot properly lift the foot. This is still the case today and makes walking very uncomfortable at times.

Back to the upper parts: The helmet has a clearly noticeable crack longitudinally through the hard shell on the back, probably from the landing. Thanks, Arai, my head remained unharmed, my next helmet will again be one of yours. A small bone blast at the sternum and the hyperextension of the neck during landing, combined with intubation during the induced coma, damaged the nerves of the vocal cords to such an extent that I have had bilateral vocal cord paralysis ever since. You can read about what that means HERE.
Fortunately, the back remained unharmed, once again I am very much convinced of my back protector. Good protective clothing rules.
After 6 days in an artificial coma I slowly woke up. Because of the miserable oxygen saturation, I could not be woken up directly after the surgery and then I had pneumonia. Afterward, I was in the intensive care unit in Worms for another week before I could be transferred ‚closer to home‘. However, I seem to have good healing capabilities, the lung basically recovered within a few days and two weeks after the surgery the damage was already very far gone. I can only feel my broken ribs after talking for a long time and when coughing, which is an entirely weird matter due to the vocal cord paralysis.
The recurrens paresis (vocal cord paralysis) was not diagnosed until months later. The entire medical staff was focused on the lungs and saw my breathing problems on exertion or when speaking as a temporary limitation. It wasn’t until September that I ran out of patience and got a referral to a pulmonary specialist. She quickly determined that my lungs were fine and that the problem was probably in my throat. Consequently, the ENT doctor was also shocked, because a bilateral vocal cord paralysis is neither common nor trivial.

Speaking of damaged and almost destroyed material: The frame of the VFR survived the crash and the following agricultural activity (it had uprooted a neat bush) only slightly bent. The end of the song: economic total loss, residual value 200.00 €, replacement value: 2,200.00 €. Was a fine moped.

After two weeks in the intensive care unit in Worms, I was transferred – as already mentioned – to the trauma surgery unit at the Höchst City Hospital, just a few hundred meters from home. Within a short time, my health improved rapidly, and I was finally able to answer all the e-mails and news. And that was only because I was lent a notebook by BigTwin, which was just great. When I had completely come to terms with the daily routine in the hospital and assumed that I would have to stay forever, I was allowed to go home after two weeks (I could also lie around uselessly there). There, a survival bonus awaited me in the form of a new notebook – urgently needed, I would not be able to get into our office on the second floor for the foreseeable future.

Three months after the accident, I very slowly started walking again, extensive and intensive physiotherapy did a lot.

Healing at home is so much more pleasant when the sun shines on your own terrace, where I prefer to spend most of my time in the deck chair. In order to get the necessary height (30° bend in the hip was rarely allowed to be exceeded in the first weeks), Kathinka nailed the recliner to a pallet. Nursing bed in the living room (bedroom on the second floor – no chance), after weeks finally again in the shower and then soon in the bathtub. The restrictions at the beginning were already severe, not least the stupid thrombosis injections that Kathinka gave me every day.
But I have a fantastic family doctor (Moto Guzzi V11 & MV Agusta F4). Every week he came by twice and took super care of everything. The physiotherapists in the PTZ were also all great and have made a decisive contribution to my orthopedic condition.

My conclusion after almost a year: Don’t do this, it’s really no fun. Unless you are keen on getting to know hospitals, rehab facilities, physiotherapy ad nauseam and physical restrictions without end. At first I had lost about 10kg, and looked particularly pitiful with my already not very pygnic figure. In the meantime, at least 4 of them are back on and I am starting to get closer to my former self.
The handicap caused by the vocal cord paralysis is the one that bothers me the most and unfortunately restricts me a lot, the rest is more or less coming together. But what is really important is that we survived.
